Botswana appoints Bogolo Kenewendo as Minister of Mines

Bogolo Kenewendo joined our Board of Directors earlier this year. We’re proud to celebrate her recent appointment to Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy’s Department of Mines.
Known for her history in leadership and significant contributions to economic development, Bogolo Kenewendo was sworn in by Botswana’s new president, Duma Boko, on Thursday, 14 November 2024.
As the former Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry this position builds on her experience in fostering international trade relations and sustainable economic practices.
In her new role, Ms. Kenewendo will work to ensure that the country’s mineral resources are prospected, developed and exploited in a sustainable manner with a key directive being to grow the diamond market.
“We’ve seen a 60% decline in diamond revenues which used to make up over 27% of Botswana’s government revenue, so that’s a lot. Our mining operations are jointly owned by the government and the De Beers corporation. We’re now focusing on negotiating a new deal with them as well as new strategies for diversifying the beneficiation of our diamond and energy space,” said Bogolo Kenewendo, setting expectations while talking to press.
We congratulate Ms. Kenewendo on her new position and wish her all the best for this important assignment.
