Investments to modernize food systems that empower farmers and secure value chains are essential to global wellbeing and security.
New approaches and solutions are required to increase the sustainable production and availability of food globally, especially in situations affected by conflict, fragility, and critical environmental vulnerability.
Peaceinvest is supporting these goals by:
Scaling up the production of plant-based proteins
The main bottleneck to food security is the lack and unaffordability of proteins and other fundamental macronutrients. Yet, given the needs, animal-derived products alone cannot be the solution, as they are not sustainable. These products remain inaccessible to the great majority of people, especially in developing areas, and if scaled up, would be harmful to the environment. Nutritious plant-based products are the most sustainable solutions for both the environment and the people.
Delivering efficient food storage facilities powered by green energy
Alongside improved production, storage solutions are needed to preserve and protect food supplies, providing an insurance policy for farmers and countries. Modelling work suggests that higher stocks and storage would have reduced the jump in major crop prices by 40% to 50% in the past couple of years. Yet, the effective storage of food has been often overlooked in food security strategies. Investing in storage systems, particularly in countries lacking mechanization, represents the highest opportunity for impact and profitability.
